Market Street Traders, Part 1: Facing a Tough Economy
It is not easy for all of us to tell our own story. When times are good we can be humble and self-effacing. When times are hard we might turn inward and find it difficult to ask for help.
Weeks ago Tammy James, co-owner with her husband Andy of Market Street Traders in Ballard, pulled me aside to tell me that they were going to have to close the store. I hadn’t known Tammy to be particularly emotional, but this was an exception. She felt that she was letting people down. She was worried about her employees. She told me how she felt when she had to cancel an order on a town in Vietnam that produces a particular item for the store. She felt that she was letting down family and friends who first helped with remodeling and then made the cafe their third place. She even felt that she was letting me down, the guy who supplies their coffee.
Ever since then I have been trying to determine some way to relay their story in a manner that might make a difference. Today my mom and I stopped by for a late lunch and I learned that they’re not finished quite yet. I will write more over the next few days, but in the meantime click through the photo above to watch the video produced by KING 5, a local news station.
